ASE Hourly Pay Rates

Academic Student Employees (ASEs)

Academic Student Employee (ASE) positions at the University of Washington are governed by a contract between the University of Washington and the United Auto Workers (UAW). ESS graduate student monthly salaries are published under the “Variable Rate Salary Schedule”, Schedule 1 columns, according to the graduate student’s academic rank.

The following pay rates apply to hourly academic student employee positions within the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. The College of the Environment and other departments may employ students with different job titles and at different pay rates.

Effective July 1, 2026 the hourly wage paid for ASE hourly job titles are:

  • $30.00/hr – Graduate Reader/Grader, Lab Support, Field Trip Support
  • $23.78/hr – Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
  • $23.78/hr – Undergraduate Research Assistant
