Michael Hemmett

Research areas

Michael Hemmett is a graduate student studying seismology and marine geophysics, with special interest in the structure and dynamics of volcanoes and subduction zones. A Washington native, Michael is committed to conducting research in fundamental science and natural hazards in order to advance the well-being of folks in the Pacific Northwest. Michael earned a B.S in Physics from Westmont College in 2025, where he conducted research in high energy physics and algorithm development for the ATLAS experiment in Geneva, Switzerland. At UW, Michael uses seismic data to study stress evolution at Axial Seamount volcano off the coast of Oregon, where he hopes to better understand mid-ocean ridge eruption dynamics and the seafloor spreading cycle.
