Distinguished Alum Speaker: Dr. Kathy Goetz Troost

Dr. Kathy Goetz Troost, LG, received her MS (1999) and PhD (2017) in geology from the University of Washington ESS department. She obtained a BA in geology from Indiana State University in 1979. She recently retired from the UW after a 12-year teaching position focused on applied geology. Her 45-year career also included 21 years as a consulting geologist working mostly for Shannon & Wilson, Inc., and 12 years as a research geologist at UW making high resolution geologic and hazard maps of urban areas.

In addition to field mapping, her research focused on deciphering Quaternary history and deposits in the Puget Sound region where she and her colleagues identified new geologic units and advanced our understanding of interglacial/glacial events and depositional environments. A self-proclaimed field geologist, her passion is to connect students and professionals to the fascinating world of field interpretation to better society’s use of- and position in- our environment. To this end, she has also co-convened many workshops and conferences for professionals and the public largely focusing on landslides and the effect of earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest.

Graduate Student Speaker: Dr. Andrew Shumway

Andrew Shumway is a Planetary Scientist and Astrobiologist who studies the elusive role of water on Mars. As a member of NASA’s Perseverance rover science team, he assists with the daily operations of the rover and investigates the geochemistry of Martian rocks and soil. His dissertation explores how soil, salt, and water intersect on Mars to chemically weather the surface and possibly even create habitable niches. Back on Earth, Andrew enjoys birdwatching, wildlife photography, and paddling in his origami kayak. After graduation, Andrew will continue exploring Mars as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington Applied Physics Lab.

Undergraduate Student Speaker: Jaimi Lutes

Jaimi Lutes is a University of Washington undergraduate student graduating with college honors in Earth and Space Science (biology) and Environmental Science and Resource Management. She worked with the Strömberg Lab from 2023-2024 making geochemical profiles of Middle Miocene lacustrine sediments. Currently, Jaimi is working in the Doty Lab isolating phosphate solubilizing endophytes from Hawaiian primary successors. She has been in the Husky Marching Band the past four years, spending the first three in the clarinet section, and most recently serving as the Drum Major, which she will return to in the fall while finishing some research projects. Jaimi has also enjoyed getting outside and exploring Seattle with the Husky Triathlon Club, and competing at regional collegiate races. Post graduation, Jaimi will spend a year exploring the world before applying to grad school (she has too many interests to currently know where to apply, so if you have ideas, please share), and she’ll dearly miss group social hour with a side of studying at the table on the third floor by the elevator bank.

Land Acknowledgement

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington acknowledges the Coast Salish peoples of this land, the land which touches the shared waters of all tribes and bands within the Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot nations. Our acknowledgement of the tribes and bands within the Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot nations comes from consultation and guidance by the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs and Federal regulations and policies. In this phrasing, we are adhering to tribal sovereignty.

ESS Diversity Statement

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) values diverse experiences and perspectives, the constructive expression of ideas, and the promotion of intellectual curiosity, creativity, and respect. We believe that science is richer and the community is more vibrant when a diverse group of people is involved. We are proud of our progress in recruitment and retention of marginalized students, staff and faculty in ESS and the role that they play in our community. We are committed to the continual improvement and diversification of our Department.
