Emeritus Office Space Policy

Policy on Office Space for Emeritus Professors (Winglee)

There are 12 emeritus faculty currently occupying shared or non-shared space. We are projecting an office space squeeze by Autumn 2009. The current space assignments policy (March 2002) does not address providing space for emeritus faculty.

Winglee is proposing that only “active” emeritus faculty be provided designated shared office space. Active is defined as having funded research, producing publications, supervising graduate students, and/or teaching. Inactive faculty would be provided undesignated shared office space (i.e., desk/computer, no storage…”a place to sit”) in Johnson Hall/ATG. According to UW policy, shared space does not have to be designated. He is also proposing that the policy that a “standing Space Committee” be charged with advising the Chair on these matters be removed. We haven’t had a Space Committee since it was charged with the surge to Condon and from Condon to Johnson Hall. He proposes that decisions on the use of space be charged to the Executive Committee.

There was a call for discussion. It was suggested that, for the purposes of determining whether an emeritus faculty is “active” or “inactive,” they complete an annual activity report. It was agreed that this would be a good mechanism to evaluate their efforts.

There was no further discussion, and a motion was made and seconded to approve the proposed changes to the space policy. The motion was unanimously approved.
